A City Steeped in Devotional History
In 1965, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupāda arrived at Boston Harbor with only a few possessions, a trunk of sacred books, and an unshakable mission to share Krishna consciousness with the world. After establishing his first temple in New York City, he sent his dedicated disciple, His Holiness Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami, to establish a center in Boston. Thus, ISKCON Boston became the fourth ISKCON temple in the world, marking a significant milestone in the movement’s early growth.
By 1968, Boston had become a key center for Srila Prabhupāda’s mission—with temples first at 95 Glenville Avenue and later at 40 North Beacon Street. During his three historic visits to Boston, Srila Prabhupāda personally nurtured the community with inspiring kirtans, illuminating lectures, the first Vedic wedding ceremonies, initiations, and the founding of ISKCON Press, which became the publishing heart of the movement.
In 1974, ISKCON Boston found its permanent home at 72 Commonwealth Avenue, where it continues Srila Prabhupāda’s sacred mission—serving as a vibrant center of devotion, spiritual education, cultural outreach, and community service for nearly five decades.
